In October of 1995, Woody's Bicycles opened its doors at 115 2nd Ave. N.E. in Winchester, TN.
Originally, Woody Deutsch owned what was basically a satellite store of J&M Bicycles in Tullahoma, working with his friend Mike Wooten. When Mike announced his intention to sell his store, Woody decided this was the time to venture out on his own.
In mid 1996, he became a Schwinn and GT dealer. In 1999, Woody purchased the old Knies Hardware Store in Winchester, and moved in.
Schwinn was sold to Pacific Bicycles (Walmart), so the store became a Trek and Gary Fisher dealer. In 2000, Brian Schaefer started working at the shop.
In 2003, he sold the Knies Hardware building (it was a much bigger space than what was needed) and moved back two doors down from the original shop location on 111 2nd Ave NW.
In August, 2008, Woody's Bicycles made the move to Sewanee to its current building.
If you do the math that's 13 years in Winchester (3 locations) and 14+ years in Sewanee (the same location). Woody's Bicycles has become one of Sewanee’s most beloved fixtures.
Deutsch says, “Woody’s Bicycles owes a lot to the innovation, imagination, and the pure magician-like talents of Brian Schaefer. Brian, the other guy at the shop who has been with me for 21+ years, has been running the show from the outset of the pandemic, and he is truly capable of making something out of nothing, fixing the unfixable.”
In the wake of the pandemic, the world turned its attention to the great outdoors. Bicycle shops and other outdoor activity retail businesses throughout the world have experienced record high sales in recent years.
Visitors coming to the Mountain Goat Trail and the Caverns, find ample space for outdoor recreation and all that Sewanee has to offer.
Woody’s Bicycles is located at 90 Reed’s Lane, in Sewanee. It is a full-service bicycle shop that offer new bicycles from Trek and Electra, as well as used bikes and rental services.
