OUR STORY
Owners, Kim and Ron Thomason bought their 280-acre farm on the banks of the Duck River in 2008. Unique in its topography, the Duck River makes a horseshoe shape around the property – thus the name Horseshoe Bend.
After building a home on the farm, they began planting blueberries and blackberries, a small orchard with apples, pears, plums, peaches, pecans and figs and a small vegetable garden, adding irrigation and fertigation systems to supplement the health of their growing enterprise.
MEET THE WINEMAKER
As a physician, Dr. Ron has always been interested in the scientific process. He began experimenting with winemaking at his family’s Franklin, TN home in 2012 using blackberries and blueberries he and his wife grew on their farm in Hickman County, TN.
Over time, his process improved and he began using other locally sourced fruit such as peaches, pears and strawberries to make his wines. Always experimenting, he delved into making more interesting and unique wines from bananas, cucumbers, pumpkin, and tomatoes.
Licensed since 2019, Horseshoe Bend Farm Wines now offers up to 18 wines with some being seasonal, has a full-service tasting room and pavilion and a 2400 sq. ft. production facility.
Dr. Ron also is an amateur beekeeper and harvests over 100 lbs. of honey each year and has a blueberry propagation nursery that is open to the public. Although the growth of this enterprise has been quite organic, he maintains, “God has simply loaned us this land and our mission is to leave it better than we found it.”
A veteran of the Air Force and now semi-retired from his medical practice, he continues to perfect his winemaking process. Dr. Ron appreciates and credits both art and science in his winemaking journey and invites all to the table for a unique wine experience.
FARM WINES & TASTING ROOM
Now with a true working farm of over 100 acres of row crop, 2000 blackberry vines, 1200 blueberry bushes and an apiary, the Thomason's ventured into the commercial wine business in 2019 showcasing their berries and other locally sourced fruits in their unique, small batch “Farm Wines.”
Their tasting room, with views of the beautiful Duck River Valley was completed in 2021 and now serves as a weekend destination for guests that enjoy guided, complimentary tastings, wine by the glass or bottle, unique wine cocktails, and more.
